Update: Since June 2008, I am no longer working with GE-Prolec, the largest manufacturer of Electrical Transformers in America. Instead, I have joined GE Energy Services Australia Pty Ltd.

In this role, I am in charge of the Analysis and Design (or re-design) of Large Motors, and Generators (GE units and other brands), and the Support for Manufacturing of components for these machines (Coils, Bars, Wedges, Insulation Kits, etc).

Most of the time, these are used in retrofits and rewinds of existing machinery, which only adds to the complexity, as the machines are already built and almost always have non-standard restrictions. More often than not, we can up-rate the machine and match the existing physical requirements.

I also perform Product Development, so if you happen to have a large generator and want us to extract the electrical model parameters, without resorting to dangerous and costly Short Circuit tests, please give us a call, we have developed a better way ! (and only involves harmless Load Rejections)

I have worked on Synchronous Machines, Wound Rotor Induction Motors, regular Squirrel Cage induction motors, Synchronous Condensers and other types up to 14 kV, and ratings of 300 MVA and below, Traction Motors (Railroad), Large DC motors (Drilling, Hoists), Wind Generators, Wheel motors for Off Highway Vehicles, Diesel-coupled Generators for Rail, and for OHV's

Pretty interesting stuff for a Static Machinery Engineer (Transfomer-head) like me !

I think this new role really complements what I was doing in GE-Prolec, that is Product Development/Advance Design Engineering for Industrial/Commercial and Distribution Transformers.

I still have very fond memories of my time at GE-Prolec, where I was involved in all aspects of Transformer Engineering, from conceptual design, specification review, design for quotation, detailed design, drawing preparation, manufacturing support, transformer test support, in-house and prototype testing, application support, and customer liaison. And I do have to say that I am still in contact with my former employer and do get to help him with some regularity
